My Traveling Statistics

8 min readNov 4, 2023

My international travels began on May 1st, 1990, the day after my 18th birthday, when I caught a flight from San Francisco, California to London, England to begin a summer of backpacking around Europe. I keep track of a few of the basic facts of my travels in my journal, such as how many US states and how many countries I’ve been to, the Greek islands I’ve visited, etc. So I thought I would publish that info here for anyone who might be curious. (This article was last updated in October 2025.)

Following are all the US States I’ve visited, in random order (the asterisk symbol * indicates that I hitchhiked in that state):

  1. California*
  2. Oregon*
  3. Washington*
  4. Alaska*
  5. Hawaii*
  6. Idaho*
  7. Nevada*
  8. Montana*

Number of states hitchhiked in: 16

Following are all the countries I’ve visited. Canada is first because that’s where I was born, in Vancouver, BC. My parents were from southern California originally. They moved to Canada in 1971, I was born there in 1972 and then we moved back to California in 1973, when I was a year old.

Since I’ve visited many countries multiple times I’ve indicated how many times I visited each country (except for the United States and Canada, because I’m a citizen of both countries). The asterisk symbol * indicates that I hitchhiked in that country.

When counting countries (since many are disputed or else territories of other countries) I go by the official United Nations list of independent nations. For example, I count the United Kingdom as one country, not four (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). I include Vatican City and Palestine, even though it’s debatable whether they are separate countries, because although they can’t vote in the UN, they have observer status. I don’t count only being in an airport on a layover as having visited a country. I must legally enter the country and do something there outside of the airport, even if it’s only for a few hours.

For example, in 2013 I had a flight from India to Canada with a layover in Shanghai, China. My flight from India to Shanghai was delayed and as a result I missed the flight from there to Canada. The next flight was twenty-four hours later. The airline changed my reservation to the other flight the next day and offered a free night’s stay at a hotel near the airport. I was given a visa so I could enter China, since the hotel was a few miles away from the airport. Although I didn’t go into the center of Shanghai, I had some free time to explore around the hotel. I walked down the street, found a local market, went into a store and looked around, etc. So I count that as visiting China.

On the other hand, in 2016 I had another flight with a layover in China, this time on my way to Thailand. At the airport somewhere in China (I forget which city) I had to go through customs, pick up my luggage and then check in again for the next flight. In order to do that I had to get a transit visa, which was valid for twenty-four hours. So I technically entered the country. But I never left the airport, so I don’t count that as a visit to the country. But later I visited Hong Kong and Macao, which are semi-autonomous regions within China, so I count them both as visits to China.

Following is every country I’ve been to in chronological order, based on the first time I visited the country. The asterisk symbol * indicates that I hitchhiked in that country at least once. The number in parentheses, i.e. (3), after some of the countries indicates how many times I’ve been there if I visited more than once. I don’t keep track of how many times I’ve visited the United States and Canada, since I’m a citizen of both countries.
