I have a travel channel on YouTube, Gabriel Traveler, where I document my adventures around the globe. One of the challenges you have to deal with as a digital nomad is the erratic availability and, more importantly, speeds of wi-fi in different parts of the world. Generally I post videos every day or two. But I just posted my first video in a week due to an adventure, you could say (if you were a glass-half-full type of person), in slow internet. Here’s the full story…

A little over two weeks ago I flew from Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia to Dalaman on the south coast of Turkey, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean Sea. From the airport I caught a bus and then a taxi to Oludeniz, a classic beach destination.

I checked into my hotel and (as is generally the case), one of the first orders of business was checking the wi-fi situation. I was on the bed and found the network, which was showing a weak signal of just one bar. I entered in the password and it connected. I tried to go to a web page, and it thought about it for a while, then the signal dropped completely and I was disconnected. Damn. I was booked in there for four days. Perhaps if I changed rooms the signal might be stronger.

But before taking that drastic step, I walked around the room with my laptop and discovered that the signal was fine over by the door. I certainly didn’t want to…
